How GroupVault works, how budgeting works, and how we keep your bank connection safe.

    Getting Started

    What is CashWise?

CashWise is a money app that combines personal budgeting and group expense tracking in one place. Connect your bank to see your real safe-to-spend number, and use GroupVaults to track shared expenses with roommates, friends, or organizations — without juggling multiple apps.

What platforms is CashWise available on?

CashWise is available on iOS and Android. A web app is also available for getting started and managing your account from a browser.

    How do I get started?

Download the CashWise app and create a free account. Free users can join GroupVaults right away. Upgrade to CashWise Pro to connect your bank via Plaid and get your safe-to-spend number; the whole setup takes less than two minutes.

    Is CashWise free?

There's a free plan and a paid plan. The free plan lets you join GroupVaults, participate in shared expenses, and track your payments. CashWise Pro unlocks everything else: bank connections, the safe-to-spend number, AI spending insights, creating GroupVaults, and the Subscription Hub.

How is CashWise different from other budgeting apps?

Most apps show you what you already spent. CashWise is forward-looking — the safe-to-spend number tells you what you can spend right now. And unlike Splitwise or Venmo, CashWise handles both your personal finances and shared group expenses in the same app.

    GroupVault

    What is GroupVault?

GroupVault is CashWise's shared expense tracking feature. It's an intelligent ledger that records who paid what, calculates everyone's fair share, and helps your group settle up via Venmo, Zelle, or Cash App — with no spreadsheets or awkward texts required.

Does CashWise hold money in a GroupVault?

Never. CashWise is purely a tracking and calculation layer — we never hold, move, or touch your money. Funds stay in your own bank accounts and payment apps at all times.

How many people can join a GroupVault?

There is no hard limit. GroupVault handles everything from a 2-person roommate split to a 60-member organization managing dues, events, and trip costs.

How is GroupVault different from Splitwise?

The core difference is integration. GroupVault lives inside the same app as your personal budget — shared expenses automatically factor into your safe-to-spend number. With Splitwise you're managing a separate app and mentally reconciling it with your actual bank balance yourself.

What payment apps does GroupVault support for settling up?

GroupVault generates settlement requests compatible with Venmo, Zelle, and Cash App. The payment itself happens through whichever app your group members already have installed.

Can I split an expense unevenly?

Yes. Any expense can be split equally, by percentage, or with exact custom dollar amounts per person. Asymmetric splits are fully supported.

    Budgeting & Accounts

    What is the safe-to-spend number?

Your safe-to-spend number is how much you can actually spend today after accounting for upcoming bills, savings commitments, and anything already allocated. It's more useful than your bank balance because it factors in what's already spoken for.

How do I connect my bank?

CashWise connects through Plaid — trusted by Venmo, Robinhood, and thousands of other financial apps. Search for your bank, log in, and your accounts sync in about 60 seconds. CashWise never sees or stores your banking credentials.

Can I connect multiple bank accounts?

Yes. You can connect checking, savings, and credit card accounts across multiple banks. CashWise consolidates everything into one unified view.

    How does AI insights work?

CashWise's AI analyzes your spending patterns and surfaces specific, actionable observations — like subscriptions you may have forgotten, categories that are trending up, or weeks where spending spiked unusually. It's designed to give you useful specifics, not generic advice.

    Security & Privacy

Is it safe to connect my bank account?

Yes. CashWise connects via Plaid — the same secure infrastructure trusted by Venmo and Robinhood. We have read-only access to your account data, meaning we can see your transactions and balances, but we cannot move money, initiate transactions, or make any changes to your accounts.

Does CashWise sell my financial data?

No. Your financial data belongs to you. We never sell data to third parties, advertisers, or data brokers. Our business model is a subscription fee for CashWise Pro, and that's it.

    What encryption does CashWise use?

CashWise uses 256-bit AES encryption in transit and at rest — the same standard used by major financial institutions. All API communication uses TLS 1.2+, and your bank credentials are never stored on CashWise servers.

Can CashWise transfer or move my money?

No. CashWise's bank connection is strictly read-only. We can view your account data but we cannot initiate transfers, make payments, or take any action on your accounts.

    Pricing

What is included in the free plan?

The free plan lets you join GroupVaults, participate in shared expenses, and track your payments and splits. That means a whole group can use GroupVault even if only the organizer has Pro.

    What does CashWise Pro include?

Pro unlocks everything: bank connections via Plaid, your live safe-to-spend number, AI spending insights, creating and managing GroupVaults, the Subscription Hub, advanced analytics, and priority support. It's $9.99/month, $4.99/week, or $78/year.

Do you offer free access for group leaders or organizations?

Yes. Through our Partner Program, approved group organizers such as Greek org treasurers, community leaders, and club coordinators receive a free 1-year Pro subscription ($78 value). Apply at cashwiseapp.com/partners.
